Finger Lakes Sights and Adventures The Iraquois believed that the Finger Lakes were formed when the Great Spirit placed his hand on the land, leaving an imprint. Geologists however, attribute the long lakes to retreating glaciers. This area is known for the scenery, including canyons, gorges, and waterfalls. It is also agriculturally rich in local foods and wineries.
