Rochester Sights and Adventures

Rochester is best known as the home of George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak.  The city has a many locations to enjoy artwork, such as the Eastman Museum at the Eastman estate where there is the International Museum of Photography and Film, and a mansion and garden tour.  Rochester is also home to Artisan Works (a 60,000 square foot bohemian art gallery) and the Memorial Art Gallery.

Other attractions include:

  •    The Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse Museum, which was an actual 40 ft. tall lighthouse built in 1822

  •    The Highfalls Heritage Area, featuring a 96 high waterfall, an entertainment district with pubs, clubs, and restaurants, and a Visitor Center describing Rochester's history

  •    Highland Park, Lamberton Conservatory, and Warner Castle, are the site of 500 varieties of lilacs, desert and lush vegetation gardens, and educational exhibits about gardening

  •    Mount Hope Cemetery, one of the nation's oldest cemetery includes notables Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass.  Lots of rolling hills.

  •    The Susan B. Anthony House, the three story red brick home of the suffragist.

Rochester Shopping

The best shopping is in the village of Pittsford, about 6 miles southeast of downtown.  In the village proper, at the intersection of Main Street and Monroe Avenue are lined with restaurants and shops.

Rochester Food

The most highly recommended restaurants are closed on Sundays.  Ugh.  Looks like I'll need to research more on TripAdvisor.  However, a popular Rochester treat is Abbot's Frozen Custard, opened in 1926.  It is thicker and creamier than ice cream, and great on hot days.
